Meryl Streep Sings and Dances in Mamma Mia Posted By : Kelly Renaul

The performance given by Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia has fans everywhere either raving or puzzled. The majority of people agree that her acting is not only a change from her more notorious roles from the past, but it is a refreshing change at that.

Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia plays Donna, a woman in her mid forties (even though Streep is 59) who lives on a pristine Island with her daughter, Sophie. Sophie is about to get married to her beau, Sky. She wants nothing more than to have her dad there at the wedding to give her away. The problem that she has, however, is that she doesnt know who her dad is. Donna has raised her completely on her own. Sophie secretly digs through her mothers diary and reads through entries from twenty years before that have details about three men, who Sophie decides could possibly be her father. Unbeknownst to Donna, Sophie invites all three men to the wedding, and they all accept the invitation.

In Mamma Mia, Meryl Streep as Donna soon discovers her three ex lovers who are all there on the island together, and the light hearted drama and comedy really take hold. Donna and her two friends go through the movie singing and talking about love. They ponder about what being young and hopeful was like, and also bring to light the fact that they are older and have different views about life and love now. Pierce Brosnan plays one of the men that Sophie suspects may be her dad, and leads the cast along with Meryl Streep in a way that most critics agree is amusingly charming. While her daughter is in love and happy and hopeful about her future and about her life with her husband to be, although Meryl Streep as Donna seems to be happy, we see that in truth, she only pretends to not be bothered by the hand that life has dealt to her. The characters mother disowned her when she found out that Sophie was on the way, which seems to add a pinch of sympathy to the rest of the whirlwind of emotions presented by the film.

Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia sings many of the songs from the classic group ABBA, which also served as the basis for the hit Broadway musical of the same name. More than 30 million people have seen the musical since it was launched in 1999, and the Broadway musical alone has grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. To date, there have been more than 1,500 performances of Mamma Mia the musical, and is still running strong today. Fans of the musical and the movie will be able to see Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia when it is released on DVD and Blu Ray.
